Can you tell us about yourself and your expatriation journey to Paris? (What brought you here? How did you feel at the beginning?)
I came here in January 2024, my husband and I got transferred from Colombia because of his job, this is my second expatriation and it’s incredible how this one has nothing to do with my previous one! each experience is simply unique, at the beginning I was excited about the adventure, it’s my first time living in Europe and I always loved the language so it was exciting, however there where some challenges especially with the language that made it a little harder and also having to start from 0 when making friends felt a bit overwhelming but happy to say it only got better with time!
Could you tell us more about your career journey? (Did you have to change career paths when moving to France? What challenges did you face?)
When accepting the opportunity to move to France, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to keep my job or not, luckily it worked out, my work is remote, so I could keep it even living in France, however it was a moment of uncertainty where I had nothing assured and looking for a new job in a country where I didn’t speak the language back then seemed hard.
What were the biggest challenges you faced when settling in France? (Cultural differences, language barriers, administration…?)
Language for sure! (I love the language) but that doesn’t change the fact that it was hard to communicate, especially because I wanted to make an effort to not speak English all the time honestly And despite being very limited with my communication at first that helped me to get used to speak in french out there more quickly.
How has Absolutely French helped you integrate? (What was the most valuable aspect for you? Language, culture, networking?)
Absolutely french was key in my integration into Paris, I started classes very quickly after arriving and it was the moment I enjoyed the most because it was my moment to socialize and also learn about the French culture, everything was new and I loved that, I learned also about other cultures, made friends and had a very fun time learning a new language!
What’s your favorite activity at Absolutely French? And why?
The cooking classes were my favorite, you have to go to the market, buy the products, speak, and then cook dishes that are not only super easy to do but completely different from what I normally cook! this is a very fun way of learning a new language.
If you could give one piece of advice to a new Absolutely French student, what would it be?
Don’t be shy and speak! One day you’ll look back and you’ll laugh, everyone’s learning and in the same situation as you are, you are in a safe zone :) the teachers will make you feel comfortable, enjoy!
Do you have a favorite French word? And why?
Bonjour! I like the tone french people use when saying it, it’s like they’re singing.
How would you describe Paris in 3 words?
Romantic, beautiful and fun!
What are your top 3 tips for expat partners moving to France? (Advice for adapting, making friends, or dealing with challenges?)
1.If you have the opportunity and the time, search for activities where you can meet people, even if you don’t know anyone, you’ll never know when you can find a friend!2.Even when it can be hard, try not to compare, each country has its unique things, and it won’t ever be the same as where you come from, and that’s the beauty of it, enjoy while it lasts, time flies!3.Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it! :)
Do you have a quote or a mantra that you live by?
Enjoy the little things in life.
